A pursuit for the Dutch midfielder may not happen at all, given a number of reasons.

Arsenal and Manchester United have reportedly ruled themselves out of a possible move for Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong.

The Premier League clubs are set not to pursue the Dutch international because of the finances involved, even if the midfielder is made available. The potential costs of signing De Jong and his salary will prove difficult for the English clubs.

The 26-year-old played in 43 games for Barcelona last campaign and is establishing himself as an important player for manager Xavi Hernandez, but speculations over his future remains.

The rumours have refused to die because Barcelona are facing a financial crunch and need to sell players in order to raise transfer funds. De Jong has not only been linked with Manchester United and Arsenal but also with Manchester City.

Last summer, it was reported that United and Barcelona had agreed on a £71 million fee, but the player did not want the move. The primary issue remained the 17 million the LALIGA giants owed in deferred salary payments.

It is reported that United have maintained interest into the current window as Erik ten Hag is keen to sign a midfielder who will partner Casemiro. Alongside De Jong, Amadou Onana is another name that has been mentioned as an option.

Given the current financial restrictions at United, the club may not make a €75 million move for the Barcelona star.

Meanwhile, as Mikel Arteta is looking for an additional midfielder, De Jong has been mentioned as an option for the Gunners.

Declan Rice is inching closer to a move to the Emirates, but they need more players, especially with the exit of Granit Xhaka and the possible departure of Thomas Partey.

Arsenal have their eyes set on Romeo Lavia, who is seen as an affordable option compared to De Jong, who is deemed expensive.

Instead of spending big on the Dutchman, Arsenal are understood that they will instead choose a move for Moises Caicedo, whom they have maintained an interest in.
