Nyayo Stadium is unlikely to host a Harambee Stars game in the near future as FKF mulls an alternative venue over a number of reasons.

Nyayo Stadium was the place to be on Sunday as Kenya hosted Gabon in a 2026 World Cup qualifier but that might change in future Harambee Stars’ home matches.

The stadium was full to the brim with Benni McCarthy’s team getting a massive lift although they suffered a 2-1 defeat to the Panthers.

However, the game witnessed some ugly scenes, when some non-ticket holders forced their way past two entry points, a major security risk that has left Football Kenya Federation (FKF) staring at possible sanctions from CAF.

FKF confirmed on Tuesday that 17,735 tickets were sold for Sunday’s match at the stadium that has 22,000 seats but there were more than that number and due to this, the federation is mulling over moving Harambee Stars matches to Kasarani Stadium in future as it has double the capacity of Nyayo.

“The other conversation we should have, is Nyayo Stadium a facility that can host Harambee Stars games?” FKF president Hussein Mohammed posed during a media briefing on Tuesday.

“Do we feel that maybe we need to move to Kasarani, these are some of the conversations that we need to have amongst ourselves and see which venue, now that the enthusiasm is back.

“Which other venue would work best for us, the national teams to play and ensure safety, security, and a good experience for the fans. That will be determined by all stakeholders involved, including the [CHAN 2024 and AFCON 2027] LOC,” he added.

Nyayo and Kasarani are the two stadiums earmarked for the 2024 African Nations Championships (CHAN 2024) which Kenya will co-host with Uganda and Tanzania in August.

That is when Harambee Stars will next play a competitive match although there could be friendly matches in the June international window which FKF can use to test another venue before CHAN.
