The political tensions have escalated by the day, forcing many Sudanese and foreigners to flee the country while many have lost their lives.

It's no secret that the political unrest in Sudan has brought everything to a standstill, including football.

The political tensions have escalated by the day, forcing many Sudanese and foreigners to flee the country while many have lost their lives.

Sudan had been chosen by the Council for East and Central Africa Football Association earlier in the year as the host country for the 2023 CECAFA Kagame Cup, but all that seems to have changed.

Pulse Sports can confirm that the East African club competition will now be held in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania, the venue for the last edition in 2021.

"Indeed, the Kagame Cup can't happen in Sudan because of the political tensions, and we don't know when all that will end, so Tanzania will be the new host venue pending confirmation," a source that preferred anonymity told Pulse Sports.

Ugandan side Express FC are the competition's defending champions, having beaten Nyasa Big Bullets 1-0 in the 2021 final at the Benjamin Mkapa stadium.

Who will represent Uganda?

Express FC are the defending champions; they will be joined by Vipers SC, who won the StarTimes Uganda Premier League during the just concluded season.

About the Sudan Conflict

At the centre of the fighting are two men: General Adel Fattah, leader of the SAF, and General Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, who leads RSF before this conflict.

In 2019 the two overthrew President Bashir, whom they had supported and worked under, and a civilian military coalition was created to help move Sudan towards democracy.

However, two years later, Fattah and Hamden worked together again to lead a military coup to take control of the country.

They claimed the takeover was to maintain stability from infighting in the civilian-led government.

The Kagame Cup is set to take place in August 2023 with all the league-winning clubs across the CECAFA region set to feature.
