English Championship side Wigan Athletic are enduring a spell of financial difficulty, leading to delayed salaries for the playing and non-playing staff.

As a result, the team is yet to conduct training on Friday and Saturday, as they seek payments before resumption, according to Sky Sports.

The club, in a statement, has acknowledged the damaging facts but underlined they are to pay all the wages at the earliest opportunity.

"There has been some delay with wages which were due to be paid yesterday (Friday, 5 May)," the statement partly said.

"Staff wages were paid on Friday with the Chairman, Mr Talal Al Hammad, making a decision to pay as many employees as possible within the organisation with the resources available."

"All remaining playing and non-playing staff will be paid at the earliest opportunity following the Bank Holiday weekend," it added.

"The ownership group, Phoenix 2021 Limited, insist they are working hard to rectify this as soon as possible and apologises again for the stress this has caused.

"All first-team players have been given the day off from training today given the difficult circumstances," the club admitted to not training.

Wigan has already been relegated to the League One following just one season in the second tier. With just a game to the season's closing, they lie rock-bottom with 41 points in 45 matches.

It's important to note that they had three points deducted in the season due to financial constraints.
