Chelsea’s decision to sack Graham Potter will cost them a lot of money, but they have managed to avoid paying the largest compensation package in football history.
The Blues sacked Potter after Chelsea’s disappointing 2-0 home loss to Aston Villa in the Premier League on Saturday.
Potter sacked as Chelsea boss
The defeat to Villa was the final straw for Chelsea's board after months of disappointing performances from the team.
Potter was appointed as Chelsea’s manager in September, replacing Thomas Tuchel, who is now at Bayern Munich.
The former Swansea manager joined Chelsea on a five-year deal from Brighton, with Chelsea paying £20m to buy him out of his contract at the Amex Stadium.

However, the English man is gone after just seven months in charge following Chelsea’s disappointing run of form.
Potter could not say he did not see this coming as he was lucky he was not fired earlier.
The English tactician won just seven of the 22 Premier League games he managed and averaged 1.42 points per game before he was put out of his misery.
Potter set for huge severance pay
Nonetheless, while Potter would be disappointed to leave his role, he is leaving with a good severance package.

Potter still had six years and five months left on his contract at Chelsea before he was sacked, meaning he is entitled to a huge payoff.
Reports claim the former Brighton manager was entitled to £50m payoff, which would have been a world-record fee for a manager.

However, according to The Athletic, Potter will not receive the £50m, but will rather get regular severance pay.
The fee Potter will receive in severance pay is not known yet, but it is likely to be a substantial sum, considering some of his backroom staff, including his assistant, are still on Chelsea’s payroll.

Potter has been sacked as Chelsea’s manager following many disappointing results that have left the Blues languishing in the bottom half of the Premier League.
Potter’s severance package also means Chelsea have now paid over £150m in severance pay to sacked managers in the Roman Abramovich and Todd Boehly era.
Only two managers failed to receive a payoff after leaving Chelsea, Rafael Benitez and Maurizio Sarri.
Jose Mourinho is the biggest beneficiary of Chelsea’s severance package, receiving £23.1m in his first spell before another £8.3m in his second spell.
