The Argentina international claims he self-administered a syrup belonging to one of his children when he was feeling unwell one night, which is against the anti-doping rules.

Barely three weeks after signing for Serie A outfit Monza, Alejandro 'Papu' Gómez has been banned from playing football for a period of two years after being found guilty of doping.

The former Sevilla player tested positive for a prohibited substance in a test that was carried out in November 2022, days before the World Cup.

It all happened in a Sevilla training session when doctors carried out an anti-doping control test in the club’s camp.

According to the footballer, he self-administered a syrup a few nights earlier without consulting the club’s doctors.

The Argentine footballer was still however allowed to take part at the World Cup which he went on to win, before going on to win the Europa League with Sevilla six months later.

Both club and player were aware of the implications being found guilty of doping would have had, and decided to part ways on the last day of the transfer window by mutual consent.

No club wanted to take a gamble on signing him as they awaited the verdict of the ruling by the anti-doping authorities until Monza gave him a route back into Serie A football three years after leaving Atalanta.

Gomez intended to wait until January to join another club once he knew if there was a sanction or not.

However, he ended up committing to Monza, with whom he has only played for twice in October.

It remains to be seen whether his ban could be reduced should the 35-year-old appeal for reduction of suspended time.
