After an impressive 2023/2024 season, Xabi Alonso has identified another key player that will make his team difficult to defeat.

Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso is not resting on his oars, as he is on the move to land another key player that would bolster his squad.

The former Real Madrid and Bayern Munich legend is set to raid one of his former clubs, Liverpool, for Cameroonian defender Joel Matip.

Like Xhaka, like Matip - Alonso aims to keep winning

Last season, Xabi Alonso led Bayer Leverkusen to its first-ever Bundesliga triumph, beating the likes of Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund to the title.

One of Alonso’s magical decisions was the addition of former Arsenal captain Granit Xhaka, who joined for £21.4m from the Gunners.

The addition of an experienced center-back like Joel Matip to partner Jonathan Tah could also prove to be another masterstroke by the highly revered Xabi Alonso to ensure his side maintains the high levels of last season.

In his first full season as head coach, Xabi Alonso guided his troops which includes Nigeria’s Victor Boniface and Nathan Tella, to an impressive 25 wins and 4 draws in all the 29 league games of the 2023/2024 season.

In all 52 games in the entire 2023/2024 season, Xabi Alonso’s side suffered just one defeat. Their only blemish was the 3-0 defeat to Ademola Lookman’s Atalanta in the UEFA Europa League final.

Furthermore, Bayer Leverkusen also won the DFB Pokal with Alonso in charge - a league double was something that no coach has managed to achieve in the club’s 120-year history.
