Xavi could surpass Pep Guardiola as soon as this weekend in Barcelona's history books with further Blaugrana records under threat
Barcelona head coach Xavi Hernandez could be on course to overtake one of his former managers, Pep Guardiola, in the Blaugrana’s history books as he looks increasingly likely to set a new points record before the end of the season.
Xavi nears new Barcelona record
Barcelona are already guaranteed the 2022/23 LaLiga title after fending off the meek challenge of Real Madrid and sealing the title with a win away to hometown rivals Espanyol.
The Blaugrana have already reached 85 points in the league, and with four more matches, they could claim a maximum of 12 points, which will see them finish on 97 points.
If they manage to reach that tally, Xavi will become the Barcelona manager with the most points in his first full season in charge of the Blaugrana.
Xavi aiming for Luis Enrique, Valverde, and Guardiola
Xavi could outdo another Barcelona native and another of his former coaches, Luis Enrique, who currently holds the record after reaching 94 points with Barcelona in his maiden season at the club in 2014/15.
The next best after Luis Enrique is Ernesto Valverde, who almost went the entire 2017/18 season unbeaten in LaLiga and finished with 93 points.
Xavi could beat Guardiola’s debut season mark of 87 points as soon as this weekend if he is able to secure victory when Barcelona take on European hopefuls Real Sociedad.
A win will see Xavi reach 88 points for the season, surpassing his tutor’s mark achieved when he was still a player in one of the best teams in the world at the time.
