The Zimbabwe U20 coach has heaped praise on Rising Stars, admitting they were a cut above his side physically.

Zimbabwe U20 coach Simon Marange has admitted Kenya’s Rising Stars were too strong physically for his side, who were tossed aside 3-1 in their first clash of the Malawi Four Nations tournament on Friday.

Zimbabwe were unable to match the intensity of Anthony Akhulia’s charges, who were inspired by an Elly Owande brace and the domination of Timothy Ouma in the middle of the park to get the victory.

Now, Meringue has admitted that Kenya were simply the stronger side, which has left him questioning the quality of some of his players.

“It was a difficult game from a physicality perspective. I think you could see the difference in size but I think we managed to do the things we wanted to do,” he said.

“But I think we did manage to do some things well. We kept the ball for a long time and in the first half, we managed to create some chances that we did take.

“But I think they took their chances and were more mature than us.”

Marange has learnt a lot from the side, and has pledged to shake things up for the future of the side. “We have learnt a lot. This was a chance that we gave to players we wanted to see and I think we have seen their level."

“Some of them are not good enough for this level and we will make some personnel changes to keep growing.”

The tournament is marking the first time in over three years that the Zimbabwe junior side -just like Kenya -is involved in international football.

The U20 team has been out of action due to the FIFA ban which was imposed on ZIFA, the same situation Kenyans went through in 2022.
