Kenya’s Badev Chager and Italian Eugenio Amos maintained their places at the top of the leader board in what was a drama-filled East African Safari Classic Rally round on Sunday

Kenya’s Badev Chager and Italian Eugenio Amos continued their rivalry in what was an intense day filled with drama at the East African Safari Classic Rally on Sunday.

In the first stage as the event approachs the finish line, Amos and Chager continue to battle for top spot at the nine-day epic rallying adventure that hits the homestretch in South Coast on Monday.

The over 50 drivers continued to grapple with unforgiving conditions in the 138km Teita to Taita sanctuary, the first stage of the day, where sticky mud conditions threatened to ensnare even the most seasoned contenders.

The leader of the pack, Amos/Paolo Ceci, found themselves entangled in the mire, losing precious minutes in the process. This setback opened the door for second-placed overall defending champion Chager/Gareth Dawe, who have been seizing every opportunity to narrow the gap, inching ever closer to the coveted top spot, aiming to defend their title.

In the provisional results/timings, Chager finished the day’s two stages firmly holding onto second place, 10 minutes and eight seconds behind the leader, while in third place was Classic Rally debutant and surprise star Emile Breittmayer/Alexis Thomas who are not only defying expectations, but also holding firmly to their remarkable third position on the leader board.

Kris Rosenberger/Nicola Bleicher and Bonamy Grimes\Martin Rowe rounded up the top five positions.

Two-time Classic Rally winner and rally legend Ian Duncan/Jaspal Matharu continue to climb their way to the top, with a commendable sixth place finish after Sunday’s action.

Patrice Perche/Julien Saunier came out victorious after clinching his first stage win of the heartbreaking first stage in the morning, while Amos picked up his fourth stage win and something to celebrate about.

For the drivers left stuck in the mud and grappling with the complexities of the challenging stage, frustration and disappointment loomed large. The unforgiving terrain tested their mettle, with some even losing their way in the stage.
