Safari Rally: Preparations in top gear as rev off nears in Naivasha

As the Safari Rally nears, Kenya has engaged the high gear in as far as preparations are concerned with every detail put in place ahead of Thursday’s rev off.

Preparations for the highly anticipated third leg of the FIA World Rally Championship, the WRC Safari Rally Kenya, are reaching their climax, promising a thrilling spectacle over the Easter weekend.

Set to unfold from March Thursday 28 to Sunday March 31 in Naivasha, this iconic rally, revered as one of the toughest in the world, is poised to captivate rally enthusiasts locally and globally alike.

The 71st staging of the event will commence with an official flag-off ceremony at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) on Thursday, presided over by President William Ruto, before traversing the challenging terrain of the Rift Valley, encompassing several farms, ranches, and conservancies around Lake Naivasha and Lake Elementaita.

Charles Gacheru, CEO of WRC Safari Rally Kenya, expressed confidence in the event's preparations, citing collaborative efforts among stakeholders to ensure a seamless and successful rally.

Gacheru emphasised meticulous attention to detail, highlighting the setup of the Service Park at the Kenya Wildlife Research Training Institute, serving as the nerve center for teams to fine-tune their vehicles and conduct essential maintenance.

“The preparations for the Safari Rally are proceeding smoothly, and we are currently at the tail-end, with meticulous attention to detail. Our dedicated teams are working tirelessly to ensure that all aspects of the event have been addressed,” said Gacheru.

“From setting up the Service Park, to coordinating logistics and ensuring safety measures are in place, every aspect of the rally's organisation is being carefully managed to meet the highest standards expected of such an event.”

Safety remains paramount, with stringent scrutineering processes in place to ensure compliance with safety standards, alongside standby medical teams equipped to provide immediate assistance if required.

The rally's extensive route, spanning iconic locations such as Kedong, Malewa, Soysambu, and Hell's Gate National Park, poses a formidable challenge to drivers and navigators. Strategically located spectator zones offer fans the opportunity to witness the action up close and support their favorite drivers.

An impressive line-up of 29 entries, featuring top contenders from around the world, including Thierry Neuville and Adrien Fourmax, promises intense competition. Local favourites such as Carl "Flash" Tundo and Karan Patel lead the charge, joined by a spirited contingent of Kenyan talent aiming to shine on the global stage.

Gacheru extended a warm invitation to fans, emphasising their pivotal role in making the rally a success.

“The Safari Rally is not just a motorsport event; it's an important event that serves to position our country as a top sporting destination. I encourage spectators to join us at various spectator zones, including Soysambu and Kedong, to experience the thrill firsthand and be part of this historic event. We also encourage everyone to cooperate with security and event personnel to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all participants and spectators," said Gacheru.
