South African driver Geoff Bell extends lead in East African Safari Classic Rally, overcoming challenges and showcasing dominance in second leg.

South African driver Geoff Bell, accompanied by navigator Tim Challen, continued his impressive performance in the East African Safari Classic Rally, solidifying his lead after conquering the challenging second leg on Monday.

Piloting his Datsun 240Z, Bell widened the gap between himself and competitors by an impressive 3 minutes and 16 seconds, outpacing Italy's Eugenio Amos. Philip Kadoorrie secured the third spot overall, trailing the leader by 8 minutes and 54 seconds.

Despite encountering overheating issues with his vehicle, Bell expressed satisfaction with their performance.

“We are still having overheating problems so we are having to change the gear early, not getting the normal top speed that we are used to, but overall a nice day and the last stage was fantastic," he stated.

Bell's expert skills were evident as he managed a top-ten finish on both stages of the day, showcasing his dominance in the rally.

The defending champion, Baldev Chager, faced a challenging start but recovered in the second stage, finishing third and climbing to fifth place overall.

Chager leads the Kenyan top five contenders on the leaderboard, with Rajesh Maini in ninth place, Ian Duncan in 12th (Datsun 280Z), and Anthony Nielsen in 14th (Ford Escort MK2). Debutant Kyle Lucas (Ford Escort MK2) secured the 24th position.

An unexpected twist in the rally came as South Africa's Johnny Gemnel claimed his first stage win, surpassing Eugenio Amos and Emille Breittmayer. Piers Daykin, driving a Datsun 280Z, secured the second stage of the day, beating Chager by 16.2 seconds and clinching his maiden stage win in the Classic Rally.

Rajesh Maini and Devan, driving a Ford Escort MK1, displayed a remarkable performance, overcoming challenging starts in previous rallies. Despite facing withdrawals on Day 1 in the past, they successfully completed both day one and two this year, securing commendable top-ten positions.

Reflecting on their journey, Devan shared, "Coming into this rally due to circumstances, we were not ready, and we had to prepare the car within a very short space of time. We only had four days to get the car ready, as the other vehicle we intended to use faced delays and did not arrive on time. The last two days have been a dream for us."

As the rally progresses into Day 3, competitors will embark on a challenging route from Amboseli to Naivasha.

The day's stages include CS7 Iremito to Selenkay (77 km), CS8 Olootepes to Isinya (64 km), and CS9 Parane to Kamukuru (75 km). The first car is anticipated to complete the stage by 12:11 pm.
