Ugandan driver Timothy Gawaya expects a tough Safari Rally in Kenya but is prepared for a challenging debut experience at the WRC event.
Timothy Gawaya is seeking to join a long list of Ugandan drivers who have impressed at the WRC Safari Rally.
Gawaya will be among the 30 crews that will feature at the prestigious event in Kenya from March 20-23 with the rally starting in the capital Nairobi before moving to Naivasha in the Rift Valley.
Alongside his co-driver Francis Wamala, Gawaya will be brushing shoulders with the world’s top drivers, who include Safari Rally champion Kalle Rovanpera, reigning world champion Thierry Neuville, Ott Tanak among others.
However, featuring in the Safari Rally was never in his mind until a late decision to try his wits at the challenging event.
“Going for Safari rally was an impromptu thought. It is something that had never crossed my mind before. When it came, I said why not,” Gawaya told Kawowo Sports.
“The thought grew stronger and the urge to share the same stage with the world’s best drivers kicked in. Only Safari rally could guarantee that for me.
“Safari rally is the right place for me to test a world-class event. And because of its proximity, I can stretch myself to get to Kenya than going to the European events which is a whole different dynamic.
“My car is a WRC kit car. It has so much that blends with WRC safety requirements and is already configured for rally. I can ably compete with some of the local crews.”
Gawaya expects a challenging event in the Safari Rally which will have over 1,000km after being used to rallies that go for just 200km.
“We know the event has a lot of demands in terms of safety requirements and the expenditure. But there is nothing to fear, we are ready to go far with,” he added.
“There is a lot of spending on that side like you have to wear WRC-supplied tyres, fuel at their price. But we are still financially preparing for the big event.
“The target is to finish the event and enjoy ourselves as much as possible. We are preparing in terms of physical fitness, emotional preps and finances,” said Gawaya.
Jas Mangat, Yasin Nasser and Ronald Ssebuguzi are among Ugandan drivers who have featured in the Safari Rally since its return to the WRC calendar in 2021.
