Uganda is preparing to make its mark on the international motocross scene as four exceptional young riders have been chosen to represent the country at the highly anticipated 2023 FIM Junior Motocross World Championship.
The championship to be held in Bucharest, Romania, this July 7-9, 2023, will provide a platform for brothers Miguel and Jonathan Katende, Isaiah Larry Ssekamwa, and Gift Ssebuguzi to compete against the world's best riders in the 65cc and 85cc categories.
The four, will be the first Ugandans to compete at the event, earning their spots for the event after outstanding performances over the four rounds of the 2023 National Motocross (MX) Championship.
Specifically, after toping their respective categories at the fourth round of the national MX Championship held at the Kyakaigo Sports Arena in Fort Portal.
Ssebuguzi, who has been dominating the national championship with four consecutive wins, emerged victorious in all three of his 85cc heats, accumulating a total of 240 points.
In the 65cc category, it was a remarkable family affair, with Miguel Katende emerging triumphant, followed closely by his younger brother Jonathan.
Ssekamwa secured the third and final spot after emerging from a tight battle with Ramadhan Mubiru, eventually edging the latter by 11 points.
Their participation in the FIM Junior Motocross World Championship will provide invaluable exposure and experience, further raising the profile of motocross in the country.
The TCS Racing Park will be the venue to host the prestigious junior race, which was built over 20 years ago due to the passion the Radutä family and Ciprian Popescu.
The track is situated 50 km north of Bucharest, the capital city of Romania and has become a central point of the Romanian Motocross Championship.
It has hosted different European Championship events, including the Sidecar Motocross World Championship and MX3 Motocross World Championship in 2003.
The track itself is a hardpack track which will be the perfect setting to host the fastest youngsters in the world.
The championship is a special event that celebrates the young and upcoming stars of the sport.
It has seen the likes of Jeffrey Herlings, Jordi Tixier, Pauls Jonass, Jago Geerts, Tim Gajser, among others, victorious at the event and then progress through to become successful MX2 and MXGP stars.
The junior championships were inaugurated in 2004, and is a feeder series to the FIM Motocross World Championship.
Meanwhile, the motocross authorities are expected to announce the national team that will represent Uganda at the FIM Africa Championship in Cape Town, South Africa, scheduled for August.
