A match fit for a final in Africa’s first-ever Netball World Cup was played to determine who finishes fifth or sixth on Sunday morning (CAT) at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.
Uganda beat South Africa 49-47 to finish fifth, their best-ever placement in World Cup history.
It was intense from the onset; every South African goal, every Centre ball stolen was followed with wild cheers in the arena.
Uganda put South Africa under pressure but couldn’t hold onto the lead as they took a slim lead into the second quarter, 12-11.

The She Cranes will be fighting for positions fifth and sixth at the 2023 Netball World Cup come Sunday after their resilience and fighting spirit guided them past Malawi on Friday evening.
Sarah Nakiyunga came on for Nassanga ahead of the second half, pushing Irene Eyaru further upfront to partner with Nuba.
By the end of the third quarter, it was evident that Uganda was against the entire nation. You struggled to locate the voiceless Ugandan fans in the arena.
Uganda led 39-37 as Nuba stretched her goals tally to 23, Eyaru added six, and Baagala had 20 assists.
Uganda was 15 minutes away from World Cup history, they had surpassed their seventh-place finish four years ago, but there was much to play for, Africa’s best-ranked team at the first World Cup on African soil.
