She Cranes’ head coach Fred Mugerwa has emphasized the importance of team chemistry as some players he summoned for national duty reported for 2023 World Cup preparations.
Mugerwa summoned a provisional squad of 30 players for national duty ahead of the 2023 Netball World Cup in South Africa.
Out of the 30, 27 are locally based.
However, as the She Cranes commenced training on April 17, Kamwokya, Kampala, only 13 players were present for the opening session.
Mugerwa sympathized with the players arguing that the federation made a 'late communication' and some were still at their day jobs.
"We have just started. The low-turn up is because of late communication. Certain things have not yet been implemented,” Mugerwa said.
Team chemistry
The provisional team is dominantly made of players from top local clubs, and the head coach says they will find a working chemistry for the national team. He notes that the local league's activity also helped keep the players in shape.
"We are going to work on their combination movements because they come from different clubs.”
“We found them when their fitness levels are not badly off because they have been in the league playing but at national team levels, we need to add more,” he added.
Mugerwa is optimistic that all locally-based players will report for training on Thursday. She Cranes are holding a tri-weekly non-residential training.
