The She Cranes, Uganda's national netball team who have already touched base in the mother city, are set to appear at their fourth World Cup.

Once again, a Ugandan national team will be on the world stage when the 2023 Netball World Cup gets underway in Cape Town, South Africa, on July 28th.

The She Cranes, Uganda's national netball team who have already touched base in the mother city, are set to appear at their fourth World Cup.

Key to note is it's their third straight appearance after 2015 and 2019, respectively; they made their maiden appearance in 1979.

How they qualified

For the past three years, the She Cranes have been one of the top netball sides in the world.

Not to mention on the African continent, where they enjoyed second place behind South Africa for large spells.

In August 2022, when the International Netball Federation confirmed that the top six nations qualified for the showpiece automatically, Uganda booked her ticket alongside Australia, New Zealand, Jamaica, England and the hosts.

Off the Court Drama

The She Cranes have had a fair share of drama from the Uganda Netball Federation, especially the president Sarah Babirye Kyityo who has been embroiled in administrative battles with the National Council.

It stems from Sarah Babirye's back-and-forth counter-accusations with NCS General Secretary Bernard Patrick Ogwel regarding failure to account for public funds. Both parties have publicly accused each other of blackmail.

In the run-up to the tournament, the She Cranes had to cope with using different facilities like the Kamwokya training centre, the Africa Bible University in Lubowa and Nakyirebe in Mpigi.

Sometimes also, the Lugogo Indoor Stadium but for a limited time because of its unavailability.

Milestones

Some of the notable She Cranes milestones on the global stage include finishing eighth and seventh at the 2015 and 2019 World Cup editions and fifth at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

With all this said, the She Cranes deserve all the moral and physical support a country playing at the World Cup deserve to get.

Worth mentioning is that each player on the squad is entitled to Shs10m as an allowance from the government of Uganda.

Uganda is pooled in group D alongside Singapore, New Zealand and Trinidad and Tobago.
