Uganda women's senior netball team, the She Cranes, have been assured of government support to the tune of Shs968m ahead of the World Cup, at least according to Brig Flavia Byekwaso, the acting president of the Uganda Netball Federation.

Byekwaso, made the revelation while hosting Joan Smith, Head of Netball Development- Africa, in Kampala yesterday.

"We want Ugandans to hear from the horse's mouth. Those who have been having fears that Uganda will not participate in the World Cup, Madam Joan is here to allay the fears,” Byekwaso noted.

According to Byekwaso, the funds for the team's preparation are in the pipeline following confirmation by the National Council of Sports.

"We have had successful talks with NCS and the Ministry of Education and Sports to take care of the team fully. As a result, funding of Shs968m plus has been assured,” Byekwaso revealed.

She further noted that all is well at the federation despite the recent developments that saw President Babirye Sarah Kityo step down to allow an investigation over alleged financial mismanagement.

"I'm here (as acting president) for three months", she stressed.

Smith also confirmed that World Netball would allocate funds to the Uganda Netball Federation to boost its World Cup preparations.

"There is a big assurance that World Netball will also extend some support as regards finances for the She Cranes and prepare a couple of warm-up games in Cape Town to ensure Uganda will compete with the strongest team possible.”

The She Cranes are preparing for the World Cup with non-residential training at TLC Kamwokya, Kampala.
