Peace Proscovia is arguably the greatest netball player Uganda has produced; she captained Uganda at two different World Cups, Australia in 2015 and England in 2019.
The Surrey Storm goal shooter will not be playing at her third World Cup in Cape Town, South Africa, due to personal reasons, a setback that has forced coach Fred Mugerwa to name a new captain and deputy.
“Irene Eyaru has been promoted to captainship from deputy captain,” Mugerwa told Pulse Sports.

NETBALL Another setback: She Cranes captain Peace Proscovia ruled out for the rest of the season, World Cup in doubt
Uganda women’s senior netball star Peace Proscovia, based in the United Kingdom, has been ruled out for the rest of the 2023 Netball Super League season, her club Surrey Storm has confirmed.
“And she will be deputized by Maggie (Margaret) Bagala; those two are senior members of the team and come with experience.”
“I have a lot of faith and confidence that they will be able to lead their colleague at the World Cup,” Mugerwa added.
Eyaru, Uganda starting goal attacker, is familiar with leadership. Currently, she is the captain at KCCA, the same team Mugerwa coaches locally.
She was also captain as Uganda won the 2018 World University Netball Championships in Makerere.

NETBALL WORLD CUP Big blow as UK-based Stella Oyella suffers knee injury
Scotland-based She Cranes shooter Stella Oyella has suffered a bad knee injury, her club Strathclyde Sirens has announced.
“It is a pleasure for me to be named captain of the She Cranes,” Eyaru told this website before adding.
“It is not easy because it comes with many responsibilities, but I am ready for the challenge.”
“The task ahead is huge as a leader; to make sure the team performs, you have to encourage the players, motivate them well, advise them well.”
She added: “Especially with the issue of discipline, that is the most important factor if we are to achieve our goals or missions as planned.”
Uganda is in group D alongside Trinidad and Tobago, Singapore and New Zealand at the competition from July 28th to August 6th.
