NETBALL WORLD CUP Uganda summons provisional squad

Uganda senior women's netball team head coach Fred Tabale Mugerwa has called a provisional squad of 30 players for the 2023 Netball World Cup.

The 2023 Netball World Cup in South Africa is scheduled for July 28 to August 6, 2023.

Uganda is pooled with New Zealand, Trinidad & Tobago and Singapore in group stages.

Pool A consists of Australia, Tonga, Zimbabwe and Fiji.

England, Malawi, Scotland and Barbados are in Pool B, while Pool C has South Africa, Jamaica, Wales and Sri Lanka.

Mugerwa maintained many experienced players for non-residential training slated to begin April 17 in Kamowkya, Kampala.

Prior to the World Cup, the She Cranes will take part in a Test Series in Barbados and familiar highly-rated opponents, Jamaica are expected to participate.

United Kingdom-based Mary Nuba, who plies her trade for Loughborough Lighting, Peace Proscovia for Storm Surrey in the Vitality Netball Super League and Scotland-based Oyella Stella lead the experienced team of shooters called up for the She Cranes.

Locally, KCCA, Weyonje and Prisons Netball Club stars dominated the list as NIC, UPDF, UCU, and Police also contributed the other numbers.

Prisons boast six players, KCCA (5), NIC (6), and Weyonje (6).

New Zealand and Trinidad & Tobago are familiar opponents to the She Cranes, having met at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, United Kingdom.

She Cranes lost to New Zealand and beat Trinidad & Tobago.

Only three African countries shall compete at the Netball World Cup scheduled for July 28 to August 6, 2023, in South Africa.
