Mathenge said they have been stepping up their preparations ahead of the battle that has attracted some of the best tennis players in the continent. Defending champions Omar Assar and Hana Goda are among the stars who will be returning for back-to-back wins.

“Of course, playing at home places us at an advantage. There are low levels of tension and we are free to play,” Mathenge told KBC Sport.

The Kenyan team also comprises of great athletes including Brian Mutua and Lisa Wele who are among the top ranked athletes in the country. Others in the squad include Josiah Wandera, Peter Theuri, Boniface Musyoki, Bahati Rufina, Lydia Setey and Mary Kinuyua.

Wele also expressed her confidence towards displaying much better results since she had attended the Djibouti Regional Qualifiers and finished among the top 10 players. She noted that the event acted as buildup for the continental show.

“In the recent competitions I’ve participated in, I have performed well. In the recent Djibouti event, I was position seven and managed to proceed to the Africa Qualifiers in Tunisia,” Wele said.

On his part, Mutua is keen to gain more experience in the event. “I want to work on my mistakes ahead of the tournament and also gain more experience,” he said.
