The African table tennis champions will earn $1,025 and 70 points each.

African champions in the men's and women's categories, Quadri Aruna of Nigeria and Dina Meshref, have suffered defeat in the last eight at the WTT Contender in Durban.

The players were knocked out of the championship on Saturday morning.

The African table tennis champions will earn $1,025 and 70 points from the championship in South Africa.

Aruna, Meshref suffered their first defeat of the year

This is the first competition the African champions will be participating in this year, and they suffered a defeat after three games.

Ukraine’s Yaroslav Zhmudenko beat Aruna in three sets game in the quarter-final 3-0 (11-8,11-7, 11-3) to book a place in the semi-final against Simon Gauzy.

For Meshref, it was a keen contest against Chinese Taipei’s Chien Tung-Chuan in the women’s singles quarter-final, but she lost 3-2 (8-11,11-8, 9-11, 11-5,13-11)

The tense game ended after five sets with the Egyptian bowing out of the championship. Tung-Chuan came from behind twice before sealing the victory in the fifth set.

African Champions journey at the WTT Contender Durban

Going into the championship, the African champions were seeded number four in both men's and women’s categories for the championship.

The journey started for the Nigerian superstar when he defeated China’s Sun Wen 3-1 (12-10, 15-13, 11-13, 11-8) in the first round.

The 34-year-old came from behind twice to beat French teenage sensation Felix Lebrun 3-2 (3-11, 11-6,12-10, 15-13, 11-5) in the round of 16.

For the Egyptian, she defeated Yuan Wan of Germany 3-1 (11-9, 8-11, 11-6, 11-9)  before she outshined Polish opponent Natalia Bajor 3-0 (11-8, 11-5, 11-8) in the round of 16. 

Aruna will be playing at the WTT Contender Doha at the Lusail Sports Arena, Doha, Qatar, later this month.
