This is not the first time the stadium is being closed as it was also temporarily closed in 2013.

Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) president Nahashon Randiek has revealed that the City Park Hockey Stadium will be closed by the end of the year for renovation purposes.

Speaking during the Vaisakhi Cup Tournament launch, Randiek said the stadium is in a dire state and will need to be upgraded and if not, it will be shut down completely and a new structure will be put up.

This is not the first time the stadium is being closed as it was also temporarily closed in 2013 for renovation purposes ahead of the Africa Cup of Club Champions.

The stadium was also temporarily closed in 2020 due to the heavy rains that made it difficult for matches to be staged due to the flooding.

“Towards the end of this year, we are going to close City Park Hockey Stadium. We are going to rip it apart…If we cannot repair it, then we will not use it. If we rip it apart, we will put it back in a better state than what it is now,” he said.

He revealed that KHU has been working with individuals from the Sikh Union who are willing to help them bring up a new structure.

Randiek added that they will be keen to support the Sikh Union Club as they seek to take hockey back to being a powerhouse. He emphasized teamwork to ensure their dream is realized.

“We are ready to welcome anyone who is ready to come in and support hockey to go back to winning ways,” he said.

He added that the Vaisakhi International event will not affect the KHU league which kick started on Friday, April 7.
