The Sports Cabinet Secretary termed the initiative too important to be allowed to fail at an early stage

Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba has admitted that he revoked the Talanta Hela council and technical committees due to a High Court decision that had suspended the team until a case filed by a sporting personality was heard and determined.

In a gazette notice issued on June 9, Namwamba revoked the gazette notice number 1649 of 2023 that created the council that would oversee the governing of the project which seeks to ensure Kenyan youth get rewarded from their talents.

High Court Judge Lawrence Mugambi suspended the establishment of the council in May until a case filed by Charles Mugane is heard and determined.

Mugane cited legal and constitutional flaws in the case he filed under a certificate of urgency, urging the judge to suspend the implementation of the council and its relevant committees in all the 47 counties.

In an interview with Nation, Namwamba said he moved with speed to shield the noble initiative from being dragged in endless legal battles that would have slowed one of President William Ruto’s key legacy projects.

“Talanta Hela is too important to be undermined by negative energy, bile, malicious intent and frivolous litigation,” said Namwamba.

“They were placing a revolutionary initiative at the risk of being embroiled in endless vexatious and frivolous court battles.

“I moved to shield Talanta Hela from this brouhaha of hot air. Talanta Hela is rooted in The Plan (Kenya Kwanza Manifesto) and the Bottom Up Economic and Transformative Agenda, a pivotal legacy initiative.”

President Ruto, however, launched the project at State House Nairobi on the same day its council was revoked, lauding it as a game changer for Kenyan youth who have struggled to earn from their talents.

The Talanta Hela council, comprising of two technical committees in sports and creatives, was gazetted in February and was to serve for a period of three years with the CS himself as the chairman.

Digital strategist Dennis Itumbi, media personality Carol Radull, comedian Daniel Ndmbuki, popularly known as Churchill, popular TikToker Azziad Nasenya were among personalities appointed into the Talanta Hela Council.

Radull was chairing the Sports Technical Committee which had other 11 members, including former Kenyan International Boniface Ambani, javelin star Julius Yego, football administrator Sammy Shollei among others.
