Emmanuel Aupal, a Ugandan student-athlete, has thrown his hat into the ring to contest for the student representative position in the upcoming Federation of Africa University Sports (FASU) elections.
The elections will be held on May 6th, 2023, at the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa, to elect an executive committee of 11 members.
Aupal, who has been involved in university sports for five years, seeks to take on a leadership role to better serve the game and the association.
In the election, he faces stiff competition from Micheal Letselebe Thabiso from South Africa and Langliz Aida from Tunisia.
Aupal's manifesto consists of an eight-point plan split into short, mid-term, and long-term projects. His plan aims to introduce a mentorship program that provides opportunities for more university students to get involved in sports and leadership positions.
Given the current deficit in that department, he also plans to increase student leadership in university sports.
Aupal believes that having more students involved in sports leadership positions would help in the Growth and development of FASU and the university sports movement in general.
"I have been involved in university sports for five years now, and with that time, I have established the areas we can get better at; hence my interest in the leadership position," Aupal said.
He hopes to educate more students about the importance of having leadership positions and equipping them with the expertise needed to succeed in these positions when the opportunity arises.
Aupal, a student leader for FISU (International University Sports) and Uganda (Association of Uganda National University Sports), has represented his university in various sports, including table tennis and squash.
If elected, he intends to continue contributing to the Growth and development of FASU and the university sports movement in general. FASU is the governing body of university sports in Africa, founded in 1971 by ten African countries to improve the development of sports in African universities.
With the elections set to take place, Aupal hopes to continue making a positive impact in the sports community by serving in a leadership position.
