SPORT Golf Union up in arms against land grabbers

As the UGU leads the charge against these land grabbers, it's not just a battle for property rights but a fight for the sanctity of sport, environment, and community.

The Uganda Golf Union (UGU) is taking a resolute stand against the ongoing misuse and illicit encroachment on land designated for golf courses across the nation.

The latest development has pitted the UGU against a private investor, Soroti Golf Club Limited, accused of engaging in an unlawful and fraudulent takeover of Soroti Golf Club property and land.

According to UGU's president Moses Matsiko, the property and land in question are currently the subject of litigation in Civil Suit No. 18 of 2022.

The affected sites include Plot No.10-12 Kennedy Square, Plot No.4-12 Serere Road, Plot No. 8, Elliot Road Soroti, and Plot No.5-13 Serere Road.

In a letter addressed to the Town Clerk, Soroti City Council, Matsiko expressed the union's dismay.

"It is with utter dismay that the said properties were illegally and fraudulently leased to Soroti Golf Club Limited; a private limited liability company and approval of plans made albeit the contestation as to the ownership."

Amidst this situation, the Soroti Municipal Council's intention to relinquish its interest in Plot No.10-12 Kennedy Square in favor of Soroti Golf Club Limited has raised concerns.

This action is deemed contrary to the council's mandate to safeguard the land for the public's benefit.

Matsiko's letter sought administrative intervention to halt any transfer or sublease of the land in question while the legal proceedings to cancel the leases are pursued.

The urgency of the situation prompted the letter to be copied to high-ranking officials, including the Minister of Education and Sports, Head Unit of State House, Anti-Corruption Unit, the Attorney General, Registered Trustees Soroti Golf Club, the Minister for Lands, Housing, and Urban Development, and the Resident City Commissioner Soroti City.

This battle against land grabbers is not a lone endeavour.

In June, a letter from the town clerk Daniel Christopher Kawesi to the Senior Registrar of Titles ordered the cancellation of the certificate of title for Plot No. 10-12 Kennedy Square, which was held by Soroti Golf Club Limited.

The grounds for this decision were rooted in a lease obtained by the Soroti Municipal Council in 2003, followed by a leasehold certificate of title the following year.

Kawesi's letter highlighted the provisions of Section 44 of the land act, emphasizing the control of land for ecological and touristic purposes for the common good.

UGU's Resilient Fight

Matsiko emphasized the UGU's determination to combat these actions.

He revealed, "We are determined to fight the criminals, we have invoked the Attorney General, Minister of Justice, the principal judge, and the people of Soroti in general. Criminals will be dealt with; we are not relenting."

The broader implications of this battle extend beyond mere property disputes. The move aligns with a broader vision for city development, ecological balance, and environmental preservation.

Matsiko underscored the importance of maintaining a green belt within urban centres, emphasizing the ecological and serene value that golf courses bring to cities.

He expressed his frustration, stating, "Wherever these 'animals' are coming from, I want to call them pigs and wherever they are coming from.”

“It’s not fair, it’s not sporty, it’s not for golf, it's very disrespectful of the people and the community and more so to the environment."

As the UGU leads the charge against these land grabbers, it's not just a battle for property rights but a fight for the sanctity of sport, environment, and community.

With legal avenues pursued and lawyers engaged, the spotlight remains on the rightful ownership and protection of these golf courses that play a pivotal role in urban and ecological balance.
