Kibuli Secondary School emerged as the overall champion of the 2023 Uganda Muslim Education Association (UMEA) Solidarity games, beating over 30 schools to reclaim the overall title for the first time in five years.
The event, which was held at Kawanda Secondary School in Wakiso over the Easter holiday, attracted over 100 teams from more than 40 schools of Islamic-based faith.
Kibuli SS won five medals, three gold, a silver, and a bronze, in various disciplines. These included gold in boys and girls badminton and table tennis, and a silver in boys' volleyball.
Kawempe Muslim Secondary School dominated in football for both boys and girls. In the boys' category, they beat Madina Islamic 1-0 in the final to win their maiden title.
While in the girls' category, their A team defeated their B team 1-0 to extend their dominance in the competition.
Guest of honour and Prince Kassim Nakibinge who attended the closing ceremony reminded the participants about the aims of the games which have helped ‘mentor many international stars’.
“UMEA games started in 1998 with the primary target of creating unity among UMEA Schools and promoting health competitions,” Nakibinge said.
“I thank those who have been organizing for having achieved our goals, that is how we have managed to witness the mentorship of a lot of national and international stars.”
“I congratulate the winner from different field that is how it has to be. The whole Idea is to participate but in games we have get a champion” I thank the host for hosting us” he added.
Ngando Secondary School retained the Netball title they last won in 2019, beating the host's side B, Kawanda SS, in the final, in a game the hosts felt hard done by especially with the officiation.
Mbogo High collected a gold medal and a silver in girls' table tennis. Host Kawanda SS got a gold medal from girls' handball, a silver in netball, and a bronze in boys' badminton.
Kinaawa High Kawempe won a gold in girls' volleyball, a silver in boys' badminton, and a bronze in boys' volleyball.
Kakungulu Memorial won a gold in boys' handball defeating Gombe SS, who finished second, and Kawanda SS, who finished third and a bronze in boys' badminton.
Ubuntu Hill took a gold in boys' volleyball and a bronze in girls' volleyball and table tennis.
Kinaawa High Kawempe's sister campus from Mugongo emerged victorious in the girls' volleyball category, beating Mariam High, with Ubuntu Hill finishing third.
