VOLLEYBALL KPA coach Mulinge on why local teams need to gain more international experience

The Dockers were Kenya’s sole representatives at the just-concluded Men’s African Championships.

Kenya Ports Authority head coach Sammy Mulinge has emphasized the need for more local teams to compete in both continental and global events so they can gain more experience.

The Dockers were Kenya’s sole representatives at the just-concluded Men’s African Volleyball Championships in Tunisia where they finished fourth. They had initially competed there in 2021 and 2022 where they finished fifth in both occasions.

He said their key takeout in the three editions of the event was experience and urged more teams to participate in international events.

“The West African teams are coming up strongly and we saw Cameroon display a really good show. This year’s event had great teams and this would be a very great learning platform for the Kenyan teams.

"In the previous editions, we’ve been having more than one team taking part in such events. It feels like we are now going back yet we need more players to be getting this kind of exposure. I hope next year, we shall have more teams going for the event,” he told KBC Sport.

He cited Cameroon and revealed that they had a couple of teams participating in the event and that’s why they have grown immensely.

“We need to expose our players since we cannot gauge where we are by playing within ourselves. We gauge ourselves when we play against other great teams and learn how they play their game,” he said.

He added that the West Africans have very high power and are strong in their style of play and that’s what cost them a podium finish in the event. He added that their governments have invested more in their leagues and that is why they are ahead.

“Their sports system has invested in youth development and that’s why they are making great moves,” he said.

Speaking about the Kenya Volleyball Federation national league, Mulinge revealed that they will be looking to prove a point despite facing tough opposition from teams like Equity, GSU, and Trail Blazers.

“With the experience, we have gained so far, we mean business in this season. We shall do better in the league,” Mulinge said.
