The last time Uganda played against New Zealand, was at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England in 2022, the She Cranes put up a spirited fight but lost 53-40.
The She Cranes are pooled in Group D of the 2023 Netball World Cup alongside New Zealand, Trinidad and Tobago, and Singapore. Their campaign will start on July 28th in South Africa against Singapore
They will later face New Zealand and Trinidad and Tobago on July 29th and 30th respectively and head coach Fred Mugerwa has welcomed the lineup of fixtures.
“All the teams we are going to meet are familiar and the fixture schedule is fair,” Mugerwa told Pulse Sports after the development on Wednesday.
“We should be in position to start well against Singapore before we meet New Zealand who are the strongest in the group.”
“New Zealand is one the best two teams in the World but when we played against them at the Commonwealth Games we put up a strong fight although we lost the game.”
Mugerwa added: “So how we start will matter a lot going into the other games. A win against Singapore will motivate us to approach New Zealand and Trinidad and Tobago with a strong mentality."
This reporter also asked Mugerwa how best he plans to have the team ready: “What we are planning for is to start early.”
“I know there is a lot that is going on off the pitch but from the technical side focus should be on the pitch. To try and get the team ready to competitively participate.”
“Because if you focus on what is beyond you, for example the financial constraints which can even be sorted now what do you do when you get to the tournament?”
“These teams are not overwhelmingly strong and we are just a good preparation away from performing well,” Mugerwa said.
