The governor’s sentiments come at a time when Kenya is grappling with lack of stadia with Kasarani and Nyayo set to be closed for renovation
Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika is positive that the Afraha Stadium will soon be ready for use following construction work that has been ongoing since April 2021.
The Afraha Stadium was closed over two years ago with the aim of giving it a new face but work has taken longer than expected.
However, according to the latest update by Kihika, the stadium is nearly 70 per cent done.
“Great progress on 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗵𝗮 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗱𝗶𝘂𝗺. Approaching 70% completion,” Kihika said on Thursday while sharing photos of the stadium.
Kihika’s sentiments come just over three months since she said the stadium was 65 percent done during her last inspection visit in March.

The two facilities in Nairobi alongside Eldoret’s Kipchoge Keino are set for a major facelift in readiness for the 2027 tournament if EAC Pamoja Bid is successful.
“I toured the renovation and rehabilitation project of Afraha Stadium. The stadium, which will sit 14,000 people, is at 65% completion and is projected to be completed by June this year,” the governor said at the time.

It means just five percent of the work has been done since which will leave many questioning whether the stadium, which is projected to gobble Ksh650 million, will be ready any time soon.
Residents have complained about the delay although Nakuru City Manager Gitau Thabanja explained that restructuring of some utilities that had passed through the stadium such as power lines and water pipes which supply water to the households neighbouring the stadium was the reason behind the delay.
Kihika’s latest update come at a time when the country is grappling with lack of stadia with Kasarani and Nyayo stadium set to be closed for renovation in readiness for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations if the EAC Pamoja Bid of Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania is successful.
Nairobi-based sides have been exploring alternative venues in the wake of the closures and Afraha would have been an ideal place if it was ready in time.
