NOC-K revealed that they have maintained close contact with the IOC and they have been able to obtain all the necessary documentation and requisite approvals.

The National Olympic Committee of Kenya has called for patience from fencing sensation Alexandra Ndolo as they await response from the International Olympic Committee.

In a statement addressed to Ndolo, NOC-K revealed that according to the IOC guidelines, if an athlete expresses interest to change nationalities, they have a waiting period of 3 years to be allowed to compete for under a different nationality.

NOC-K revealed that they have maintained close contact with the IOC and they have been able to obtain all the necessary documentation and requisite approvals.

“The Committee which will consider this application will next seat in the month of June, after which, we shall be advised on whether the waiver has been granted and if so allow the athlete to represent Kenya,” the statement read in part.

Due to this, NOC-K added that the financial support available cannot be processed as it comes under the Olympic Solidarity for which the above process needed to be completed.

It was, however, noted that they will hasten to add the funds available from the programs just to provide support like other athletes.

“It is not sufficient for all ranking events for individual athletes who may need to participate in several to keep good rankings,” the statement read.

Meanwhile, NOC-K also revealed that they will have a retreat with the Ministry of Sports will be having to consider all aspects of qualifications and participation in the Paris 2024 Olympics.

The Retreat is expected to come up with strategic direction including but not limited to pathways of possible sports towards Olympics.

“Ndolo is among the athletes whose pathway is a priority with very high chances of doing well in the Olympics.

The Kenya Fencing Federation on approval of the change of nationality is expected to make application to the Ministry of Sports for funding based on the existing structure and policies which will have taken cognizance of the Retreat resolutions,” the statement added.

NOC-K said Ndolo had expressed interest to switch her nationality from representing Germany to Kenya last year. In a letter dated September 9 last year, the German Fencing Federation agreed to release her to the Kenya Fencing Federation.

On September 17, the International Fencing Federation approved her request to change her nationality. On April 24, 2023, the National Olympic Committee of Germany gave her a waiver of no objection on the same after NOC-K requested fellow Olympic committees for that consideration.

“She expressed her intention to compete for Kenya at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games as well as Continental and International Fencing Competitions organized by International Fencing Federation,” the statement revealed.
