Paula Badosa and Ajla Tomljanovic have joined a growing list of top players out of the Australian Open.
As the Australian Open gets closer, more players are becoming casualties of not being part of the first Grand Slam of the year. The latest are Paula Badosa and Ajla Tomljanovic.
Badosa, who is currently the World No. 11, announced her withdrawal via her social media platforms, stating she has an abductor injury.
The Spanish player was forced to withdraw from her Adelaide semifinal match, and now the Australian Open. Not only will she miss the Grand Slam tournament in Australia, but she has also indicated that she will be sidelined for at least a few weeks.
"Hi everyone, bad news. During the quarterfinal match in Adelaide, I hurt myself and after receiving the results I will have to be out a few weeks. Sad to miss Australian Open this year, really going to miss it. I will do everything I can to return as soon as possible," Badosa wrote in a message posted on her social media handles.
The 11th-seeded Spanish player has been ranked as high as world No. 2 in singles by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA), which she achieved on April 25, 2022.
Badosa has won three career WTA Tour singles titles and produced her best performance at a Grand Slam tournament by reaching the quarterfinals of the 2021 French Open. Later that year, she won the Indian Wells Open, a WTA 1000 tournament, which is her biggest career title to date.
Tomljanovic announces Australian Open withdrawal
Homegirl, Tomljanovic also announced she will not be partaking in her home Slam due to injury.
She took to her social media to make it public, stating she did all she could to be fit for the Australian Open, but it just wasn't meant to be.
“It absolutely pains me to have to write this message but unfortunately, I won’t be able to compete at this year’s Australian Open. I’ve done absolutely everything in my power to get healthy but just ran out of time to heal and be 100 percent ready to compete at a high level. It’s been a very tough decision to make but I have to listen to my body," Tomljanovic announced.
Both ladies now join a growing list of top players that won't be playing at the Slam, with World No. 1 Carlos Alvarez also out due to injury and four-time Grand Slam winner, Naomi Osaka out after announcing she is pregnant.
