Port Harcourt to host National Cycling Road Championship

The Cycling Federation of Nigeria (CFN), has confirmed that Port Harcourt, the Rivers state capital, will host the National Cycling Road Championship.

The National Cycling Road Championship, in conjunction with the Rivers State government, will be held on May 21.

CFN President, Giadomenico Masari, praised Governor Nyesome Wike for his decision to foster the growth of the sport by allowing the hosting of a national cycling championship on the eve of his departure.

According to Masari, winners in the four categories of the one-day tournament would receive additional consolation prizes in addition to winning between N300,000 and N600,000.

Elite men, women, junior men, and women are the four categories.

He said, “This is good for the sport, especially the prize money, which is the first of its kind in Nigeria’s cycling.

Meanwhile, the technical director of the cycling federation, Bashir Mohammed, is expected to lead an advance party of officials to Port Harcourt during the week to mark the route of the competition and make arrangements for other logistics.

Abaka picked up the ticket at the 19th African Road Cycling Championship in Ghana after winning a gold medal in the Class B Tendam elite men’s category.

Abaka has urged the NCF to work to raise the level of competition in the nation.

According to him, “Nigerian cyclists would appreciate the federation if it gives more attention to the development of the sport. Nigeria has talented cyclists, who, with adequate support, can be worthy ambassadors at international tournaments."

At the 19th African Road Cycling Championships in Ghana, Nigeria was represented by 12 cyclists (11 women and 1 man).
