Some families have had the blessing of producing siblings who have represented the country in major events around the world.
It is true that one has to have talent in order to excel in sports, but some families are endowed because they have had more than one member in sports.
This is the case worldwide, as one can see from the example of the Serena sisters, who excelled in tennis. Kenya is a known sporting nation, and some families have produced outstanding athletes.
Pulse Sports looks into a number of such families and compiles the areas in which they excelled and the trophies they lifted.
Siblings in Kenyan sports
The Wanyama brothers
McDonald Mariga and Victor Wanyama, whose current market value is €3.50 million according to Transfermarkt, are two of the best footballers the country has ever produced.
Mariga, the eldest of the two, played for Inter Milan and was part of the team that won the 2009/10 UEFA Champions League.
Wanyama played for Celtic, Southampton, and Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League and was also part of the squad that reached the Champions League final in 2019.
Apart from the two known Wanyamas, there are other siblings who also participated in sports.
Their brother Sylvester played for the defunct Sony Sugar, and Thomas Wanyama featured for Sofapaka and Mathare United. Mercy Wanyama played Basketball.
Arguably, one of the notable siblings in the Kenyan sports arena.

Humphrey Kayange, Collins Injera and Michael Agevi
Injera is a known sporting name courtesy of his achievements in Rugby with the Kenya Sevens.
Apart from Collins, Kayange also excelled with the national side, as did Michael Agevi.
All have had times with Shujaa and locally played for Mwamba RFC. They all enjoyed legendary status and rank high when it comes to siblings in Kenyan sports.
Tikolos
The most famous Kenyan names in the world of cricket deserve a mention when discussing siblings in Kenyan sports.
The family produced three brothers: Steve, Tom, and David.
Among the three, Steve is considered the most successful, as he scored the most runs and is second-best when it comes to wickets. He played in Bangladesh and England.
Tom was Kenya’s captain in most matches (22). David managed three ODI matches.
Dunford brothers
The family that has produced the swimming gurus and the most famous names are Jason Dunford and David Dunford.
Jason’s achievements include the Commonwealth (two), Universiade (four), and All-Africa Games (five), while David is an African champion and a Commonwealth Games finalist.
Brothers who cannot go without being noticed when discussing siblings in Kenyan sports.
The Makutos
The family that made their names in the Volleyball world. The Makuto sisters who excelled on the volleyball field are Everlyne, Violet, Elphas, and Asha.
Asha played for Kenya Pipeline and won the 2010 FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship in Japan. Elphas played for the General Service Unit (GSU).

Brigid Kosgei and Pamela Kosgei
They are another pair of siblings who have excelled in Kenyan sports, and Pamela is the youngest.
Brigid specializes in marathons and won the 2018 and 2019 Chicago Marathons, the 2019 and 2020 London Marathons, and the 2021 Tokyo Marathons.
She is the women’s marathon world record holder in a mixed-sex race with a time of 2:14:04, a record set in 2019 at the Chicago Marathon.
Pamela has represented Kenya in the World U20 Championships and always trains in Elgeiyo-Marakwet County.
Mercy Cherono and Caroline Chepkoech
They are the other siblings in Kenyan sports.
Mercy was a silver medalist in the 5000 meters at the 2013 World Championships in Athletics and a two-time world junior champion in the 3000 meters in 2008 and 2010.
She also took part in the 2007 World Youth Championships in Athletics and the 2008 Commonwealth Youth Games.
On the other hand, Caroline won the inaugural junior race at the 2011 African Cross-Country Championships.
She won gold in the 5000 metres at the 2011 African Junior Athletics Championships and a bronze medal in the 3000 meters at the 2011 World Youth Championships in Athletics.
At the 2012 World Junior Championships in Athletics, she was fifth in the 5000-meter race and at the 2013 IAAF World Cross Country Championships.

Annete Kundu and Agripina Kundu
The siblings are the other figures in Kenyan sports, although they played in different disciplines.
Agripina specialized in volleyball and played for the Malkia Strikers, while Annette is a goalkeeper who plays for Harambee Starlets.
Annette was part of the team that lifted the 2019 CECAFA Women’s Championship in Dar es Salaam. At the club level, she has played for Lakatamia FC in Turkey.
Agripina’s memorable achievement was when she won the 2019 African Championship in Morocco.
Austin Odhiambo and Tyson Otieno
Other siblings in Kenyan sports feature in the Football Kenya Federation Premier League.
Odhiambo previously played for AFC Leopards before he crossed to Gor Mahia. Just like he was a regular starter at Ingwe, he has established himself as a dependable player within Gor Mahia’s set-up.
Otieno plays for Kariobangi Sharks and is a regular first-teamer. One of the players who has earned the trust of head coach William Muluya.

Another family that excelled in volleyball as they produced major names that include Philip Maiyo, Thimon Maiyo, and Lydia Maiyo, who played for Kenya Prisons, pictured), Wobestus Maiyo played for Nairobi Water, and Brian Maiyo featured for GSU.
Philip, who is the eldest, was ranked one of the best in the Bulgarian Volleyball League when he was turning out for CSKA Sofia and deserves a mention among the siblings in the Kenyan sports debate.
He also played for CVM Tomis Constanta in Romania.
