Union CEO Isaac Lutwama unveiled plans to construct a formidable XVs team within the next eight years, aiming to compete in the Rugby Africa Cup once more and to secure a win.
To arrest the slump being experienced by the national XVs rugby team, the Uganda Rugby Union has initiated efforts starting with the Victoria Cup.
Union CEO Isaac Lutwama unveiled plans to construct a formidable XVs team within the next eight years, aiming to compete in the Rugby Africa Cup once more and to secure a win.
“We have selected the finest players for the XVs, and with an eight-year blueprint,” Lutwama detailed before elaborating on the strategy.
“We aim to establish a potent program; our sights are set on a robust team for the upcoming two World Cup cycles,” Lutwama added.
The team will see Fred Mudoola at the helm, assisted by Leone Lubambula.
Moreover, former players such as Alex Mubiru and Marvin Odongo, who specialize in forwards, and Timothy Mudoola, handling strength and conditioning and assisting with the backs, have been brought on board.
The goal is to ensure collective effort in building a robust XIs program. Uganda is poised to co-host the Victoria Cup with Zambia and Kenya.
Additionally, Uganda’s match against Kenya will serve as the Elgon Cup’s first leg, with the second leg scheduled for 11th November in Nairobi.
The tournament kicks off on 28th October, featuring Uganda versus Zambia at Kings Park Arena.
The second matchday, set for 2nd November, will witness Kenya competing against Zambia at Kyadondo Rugby Grounds.
On the third matchday, Uganda will clash with rivals Kenya on 5th November at Kings Park Arena.
This game will also represent the first leg of the Elgon Cup, with the return leg due on 11th November in Nairobi.
