Tolbert Onyango's charges have failed to make it past the tournament's quarterfinal stage since 2017, and dreams of core status will be put on hold for another year.
The Uganda Rugby Cranes Sevens will have to wait a little longer in their chase for core status in the HSBC World Series.
This year's attempt at getting in came to an end after a 12-07 loss to Belgium in the quarterfinals of the World Rugby Sevens Challenger Series Saturday afternoon in Stellenbosch, South Africa.
It is yet another year of the Cranes starting with promise and falling short when it matters the most.
The defeat to Belgium came after Saturday afternoon's 12-00 loss to Germany in the last game of Pool B.
Uganda had started the tournament with commanding victories over Brazil and Korea 7s on Day One but struggled to get going on Day Two of the tournament.
For now, attention will turn to fighting to maintain last weekend's fifth place in the classification games.
Tolbert Onyango's charges have failed to make it past the tournament's quarterfinal stage since 2017, and dreams of core status will be put on hold for another year.
Having gone into the tournament hoping to break the jinx and get past the quarterfinal stage, Onyango and his troops will have to do it all over again next year.
The World Challenger Series provides a pathway to the HSBC World Rugby Series Circuit, something Uganda has been pushing to get to since 2017 when they played in the World Series Qualifier in Hong Kong.
The competition's winner will be decided on aggregate points over the two events and enter a four-team playoff at the HSBC London Sevens in May, together with the teams placed 12th to 14th after 10 rounds of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series 2023.
The winner of the playoff will then achieve the coveted Sevens World Series 2024 status.
