Ondego is the first ever player to have earned a call up to the Kenya National 7s side Shujaa for the World Rugby Series from varsity side Zetech Oaks.

Kenya 7s’ newest sensation Brayan Ondego is living his dream after breaking into the national team, Shujaa. Representing varsity side Zetech Oaks, Ondego was part of the 13-man squad for the Dubai leg of the 2024/2025 HSBC SVNS series, marking a significant milestone in his rugby journey.

Ondego's rise is a testament to resilience. His breakout performance in the 2024 SportPesa 7s circuit earned him a spot with the Morans during the Safari Sevens in October. Consistently impressing at every opportunity, Ondego became an undeniable pick for Shujaa head coach Kevin ‘Bling’ Wambua.

Despite being part of the Chipu 7s squad in 2021, Ondego had to wait three years to don the national team jersey. Reflecting on his debut, he described it as an unparalleled moment of pride.

“It is the most wonderful feeling I have ever felt in my life,” Ondego shared. “Playing alongside colleagues from the local circuit for the national team is a dream come true. I am grateful to my coaches for believing in me and giving me this platform to showcase my talent.”

As the first Zetech Oaks player to represent Shujaa, Ondego views his call-up as a milestone for himself and aspiring players. He draws inspiration from Patrick Odongo, another university rugby star -features for Daystar Falcons - who has become a key figure for Shujaa.

“It’s such a proud moment because this has never happened before for Zetech. I hope my journey inspires others to believe they can achieve the same, no matter where they come from.”

Like many in Kenya’s rugby fraternity, Ondego idolises Collins Injera, one of the greatest players in the history of the World Rugby Sevens Series. Injera’s legacy, including his record-breaking 279 tries, serves as motivation for Ondego to carve his own path.

“Collins Injera is the player I always looked up to. I had hoped to play alongside him, but even though that didn’t happen, I am thrilled about my journey and the future.”

Rugby is a family affair for the Ondegos. Bryan’s brother, Dennis Ndayala, is a flyhalf for Mwamba and a Chipu alumnus, while their sister, Faith Livoi, represents Kenya Lionesses in both 7s and 15s formats.

“Rugby is everything in our household,” Ondego said. “My parents pushed me to leave my comfort zone, and I’m grateful for their unwavering support.”

Ondego attributes his success to a shift in mindset, focusing on proving his capabilities and earning recognition through hard work.

“I wanted to show the world what I had to offer. It’s all about the mindset, and once I got it right, the opportunities followed.”

Bryan Ondego’s journey from Zetech Oaks to Shujaa underscores the importance of perseverance, self-belief, and family support in achieving greatness. As he continues to develop his skills, Ondego remains a beacon of inspiration for young players aspiring to follow in his footsteps.
