Rugby New York made the announcement on Friday, praising Akuei for his remarkable impact on the team.

"An award dedicated to an Ironworker in their first season of pro rugby, our 2023 Apprentice of the Year is Monate Akuei," stated the team.

"Monate exploded onto the scene midseason and instantly brought his unmatched energy, speed, and dynamic play to the team."

Akuei moved to the United States in 2020, where his exceptional skills and performance caught the attention of the Old Blue Rugby team, leading to his signing in April 2023.

Akuei's rugby journey began at Kirobon High School, where he first discovered his passion for the sport.

With determination and hard work, he was signed by Nakuru RFC and quickly rose through the ranks, showcasing his exceptional talent.

Akuei's impressive career then began to take shape when he featured prominently for Kenya Under 20 in the Barthes Cup, showcasing his natural talent and earning recognition on the rugby stage.

He continued to make his mark, representing Kenya Sevens, Shujaa, and later earning a spot on the Kenya 15s side, Simbas, for the Elgon Cup.

His contributions were instrumental in leading the Simbas to victory in the prestigious competition, setting the stage for even greater achievements.
