RUGBY Gibson Weru details what Menengai Oilers need to do to retain Sevens Circuit title

Weru admits that this year’s circuit is very competitive and will get harder over the remaining legs.

Menengai Oilers RFC head coach Gibson Weru believes his side must become more consistent if they are to stand a chance of retaining the National Sevens Circuit title.

Oilers finished fourth at the Prinsloo 7s in Nakuru following a loss to KCB on Sunday, consigning them to staying third on 46 points, 17 behind log leaders Kabras Sugar, who Weru believes are the most consistent side.

Speaking to Pulse Sports after the match, Weru expressed regret at not getting results “when it mattered” but was still insistent on taking the positives out of the tournament.

“We started off very well. We had a fantastic performance and a good quarterfinal,” Weru said. “ We could not deliver when it mattered the most against Harlequins and fell short,” he added.

“It is what it is but a lot of lessons to learn and a lot of positives to pick from. Losing John Okoth and Bildad (Ogeta), those are two key players for me so it becomes a cycle that affects everything and when you need to dig deep, you have to have players who can do that. It played a key part in our loss.

“It was a competitive one. I am excited by the level of competition. I am challenged. We will see how well we can respond and how well we can prepare in a few days. I am happy with the squad. We will come back better and stronger.”

Weru admits that this year’s series is very competitive and they face a daunting task of retaining the title they won last year.

“It is becoming harder by the series (retaining the title). We have to try and win a tournament first and see where it takes us. It is going to be a very competitive series.

“Between the top six sides, any team can win on any particular day. Kabras are the most consistent side and if they can maintain that, it becomes harder.

“If they win on Sunday (which they did) it creates a gap that is very difficult for us to try and cover, but on the series itself, I am keen to try and build a team that is capable of winning and playing together and from there, we can see how to grow.

“We are still a young side but we have to produce consistent performances so, it is not good enough for us but we will get better."
