The Lady Rugby Cranes showcased their prowess, overpowering Zambia with a 29-10 victory to secure a bronze medal. This achievement came despite a heavy 27-00 defeat at the hands of Kenya in the semi-finals.

Uganda's representation in the recently concluded Rugby Africa Women’s 7s in Tunisia was nothing less than inspiring.

The Lady Rugby Cranes showcased their prowess, overpowering Zambia with a 29-10 victory to secure a bronze medal. This achievement came despite a heavy 27-00 defeat at the hands of Kenya in the semi-finals.

This commendable third-place finish provides Uganda another opportunity to chase Olympic qualification via the Repechage tournament slated for next year.

In acknowledgment of their feats, the National Council of Sports tweeted, “Well done, Ladies, proud of your achievements.” Echoing this sentiment, Ugandan Rugby 7s ace Phillip Wokorach commented, “Well done, girls, proud of you.”

Dorothy Nekesa, an executive member of both the Uganda Rugby Union and the Uganda Sports Press Association, added her voice of appreciation.

She tweeted, “Lady Cranes finish third and earn another shot at the Olympics in next year’s Repechage; they depart Tunisia with bronze after vanquishing Zambia 29-10.”

Under the guidance of Charles Onen, the team began their campaign with a 12-05 triumph over hosts Tunisia, led by Grace Auma's two tries and a conversion.

A subsequent face-off with South Africa didn't go in their favor, resulting in a 19-00 defeat. However, the team rebounded with a resounding 22-00 victory against Zimbabwe, setting the stage for a semi-final duel with arch-rivals Kenya.

Despite Grace Auma's absence, the team fought hard. But against Kenya, the Lady Rugby Cranes couldn't make an impact, yielding 27 points unanswered.

Their resolve was tested yet again in a clash with Zambia, where they emerged victoriously, clinching third place in the qualifiers.

The road to the Olympics continues for Uganda as they prepare for the Repechage tournament, scheduled between April and May 2024.

Both the men's and women’s 7s teams are anticipated to participate ahead of the Paris Olympics.
