It has been a season of big results for the university side thus far and talk of relegation is a distant memory.
Four match days into the new Nile Special Rugby League season and it is the Stanbic Black Pirates and Makerere Impis who are yet to lose a game.
The two sides maintained their good start to the season with victories over the weekend.
Cyrus Sebuliba’s Impis edged Mulago Rams 23-21 in the highly-charged Makerere Derby at the Graveyard to register their fourth win of the season.
It has been a season of big results for the university side thus far and talk of relegation is a distant memory.
To start the season, the Graveyard outfit defeated Jinja Hippos 25-22 at Dam Waters Grounds, Jinja to make clear their intentions of the new season.
That was followed by an 18-11 victory over the Walukuba Barbarians at Makerere and another big win, 15-13 away to Mongers in Entebbe.
Flyhalf Henry Nsekuye, winger Ivan Otai eighth man Pius Mpoza have all been in top form for the third-placed side.
Next up for Impis is a trip to Legends where Rhinos await them and going by the current form, Subuliba and his charges have every reason to go into the game expecting to pick points.
Pirates strong
Pirates started the new season with a statement win over defending champions Platinum Credit Heathen at King’s Park Arena in Bweyogerere.
Their 24-18 victory marked a strong start to the campaign and sent a message that they are here to fight for the championship.
Wins over Rhinos and Hippos followed. The 22-09 victory over Toyota Buffaloes on Saturday maintained the Sea Robbers at the top of the log.
Marvin Odongo and his troops can expect a much tougher challenge when they host Kobs on February 25th.
Victory over Brian Makalama’s side would put Pirates in a much better position regarding the title race.
Kobs bounce back
After that heart-breaking 17-15 loss to rivals Heathens, Kobs needed to get back to winning ways and that came against the Hippos at Legends.
In a season where Pirates and Heathens are the other sides expected to challenge for the title, every point will count.
Bonus points will play a big part in deciding where the title goes and Kobs needed to not just win but get the bonus point and stay within touching distance of the top spot.
It was Lawrence Wakabi who returned to action after eight years to score the last two tries for Kobs and confirm the bonus point. Joseph Aredo was yet again on top of his kicking game and made four of five conversions on the day.
Heathens on course
Heathens have recovered well from their opening day loss to Pirates.
Three wins on the bounce have the Kyadondo outfit just three points of the pace in the title race.
