The dreadlocked playmaker had an impressive 2023 National Sevens Circuit which saw the Bankers clinch the overall title.

KCB’s playmaking sensation Brian Wahinya has revealed what he is working on to become a better player ahead of the Kenya Cup season which kicks off in November.

Wahinya was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the Kabeberi Sevens tournament, the last leg of the 2023 National Sevens Circuit as KCB roared to both the tournament and overall circuit win.

The Kenya Simbas player believes that KCB ”had a lot of character” and were willing to walk on broken glass for each other, which is a big factor that enabled them to win the title.

“I won my first sevens series and it really means a lot to us. I still cannot believe it, ” he told Sports Eye.

“As a team, the boys have a lot of character. People dug deep and played for each other knowing the hard work we have put in. We played for each other well and I really love my teammates.”

Wahinya stepped up to the plate and gave a good account of himself, in the absence of key sevens players who were away on international duty a fortnight ago, and never looked out of place.

The 25-year-old revealed the biggest thing he is trying to work on in order to improve his game is the tactical side of it, which will enable him to know how to rally his fellow teammates in different game states.

“I am trying to work on the tactical ability like just being composed,” Wahinya said. “At times, the game can go haywire and you need someone who can calm things down,” he added.

“When under pressure, I want to master the art of making my teammates relax because other things are already in place, so it is just a matter of working on my tactical ability.”

KCB lost both the Kenya Cup and Enterprise Cup to Kabras Sugar but made amends for it by winning the Sevens Circuit, which gave them something to smile about and give them a platform to build on for next season.
