RUGBY KCB's Samwel Asati reveals reason behind prominent Kenya Sevens rise

The KCB scrumhalf received his first call-up to the Kenya Sevens set up in September before going on to play a key role in the side securing Olympic qualification.

Kenya Sevens scrum-half Samwel Asati has revealed the reason his development as a player has made significant progress over the last year.

The KCB RFC scrum-half believes that his rise to becoming a prominent player for Shujaa during the Africa Sevens that Kenya won against South Africa in Zimbabwe has all been thanks to his consistent performances at club level.

“It all boils down to consistency,” Asati told Pulse Sports. “I have to keep working hard each day in order to keep ticking the boxes of progress. It helps me keep growing every single day,” he added.

Asati believes that the international experience he has gained both at youth and senior level for both the 15s and sevens side has enabled him to take up a leadership role in Kevin Wambua’s sevens setup, where he sensationally managed to displace Brian Tanga as a starter.

“The experience boils down to playing at an international level. International-level rugby gives you that confidence and helps you take matters (into your own hands) at some point.

“When things go haywire, it allows you to learn how to calm and compose yourself and as well that leadership qualities you gain. You get to lift not just yourself, but also your team.”

Asati was part of the sevens Under 16 contingent that represented Kenya in South Africa and Germany (2013 and 2014 respectively). The squad also had hard hitter Dominic Coulson.

He was also a key player for the U20 side in 2018 where he produced a valiant display in the Barthes Cup final but had to endure heartbreak as Chipu fell to a 37-18 loss to Namibia U20 at Windhoek’s Hage Geingob Stadium.

While still at the KCB academy, Asati was one of the crucial players that helped the Cubs win the Erick Shirley Shield beating Resolution Impala Boks 21-17 in a hotly contested final.

In 2018, Asati had an opportunity to be selected as the most promising young player of the Prinsloo 7s 2018 in the National 7s circuit.

Though the competition was stiff from the likes of Wanjala Michael, Marlin Mukolwe and Kimwele Michael, Asati still emerged as one the best scrum half at KCB.

Asati was also part of the Simbas side that reached the final of the Rugby Africa Cup in July 2022 but were unfortunately ruthlessly knocked out by Namibia.
