RUGBY Kenya Cup review: Bitter taste for Homeboyz against Kabras as KCB toss aside Mwamba

Mark Kinyanjui 20:36 - 13.01.2024

Kabras Sugar completely outclassed Homeboyz as Mwamba's woes continued against KCB to headline the outcomes of Match Day Four of the Kenya Cup.

Match Day Four of the 2023/2024 Kenya Cup season is now behind us, with no real surprises arising over the duration of the weekend.

Menengai Oilers managed to outclass derby rivals Nakuru RFC, Kabras Sugar totally outclassed Homeboyz, Mwamba continued their struggles with a defeat to KCB while Harlequin just got one over Strathmore.

Below is a recap of all the action as it was:

Homeboyz 6-71 Kabras Sugar

At Jamuhuri Park, Kabras Sugar completely obliterated Homeboyz 71-6 to keep their Kenya Cup defence on track.

The game had to be delayed because there was not an ambulance present to aid injured players.

Brian Tonya scored the opening try before Lameck Ambesta and Erick Cantona scored the second and third tries for the Sugarmen to put them up and cruising.

Ambetsa and Tonya then each scored their second tries of the afternoon to give them a comfortable 31-0 lead, and although Collins Indeche got red-carded, after the referee deemed his tackle on a Homeboyz player to be dangerous, it was not enough to slow them down.

Homeboyz did convert their penalty, but then Kabras added more tries through Barry Robinson, Eugene Sifuna, and George Nyambua to give them a 3-50 Lead. Homeboyz got another penalty to make six points but another three tries by Cantona and a brace by Griffin Chao gave them the well-deserved victory.

Mwamba 5-36 KCB

Over at the RFUEA Grounds , KCB made it four wins from four with a 36-5 victory over Mwamba

Kenya Simbas prop Wilhite Mususi opened the scoring for KCB with an unconverted try. Captain Griffins Musila added to the lead with a converted try, courtesy of Darwin Mukidza, making his first start of the season.

Winger Michael Kimwele secured the third try for KCB, with Mukidza missing the conversion, resulting in a 17-point lead at halftime.

In the second half, KCB secured their bonus point with another try before Mwamba managed to score their first unconverted try, bringing the scoreline to 22-5. The Bankers continued their dominance, adding 14 more points, including a try by substitute Kolian Persian, ultimately sealing a comprehensive 36-5 victory.

Strathmore 6-8 Harlequin

Kenya Harlequins defeated Strathmore Leos 8-6 to pick their fourth consecutive win in a game played at the soggy Strathmore University grounds.

Harlequins were quick off the mark after a scrum resulted in Charles Kinyanjui getting the ball in space before dashing past the try line to score an unconverted try.

In the second half, the game effectively resorted to which of the two fly-halfs would outscore the other.

Strathmore would reduce the deficit to two points thanks to a penalty before fast-rising Cornelius Mokoro responded with a penalty goal for Kenya Harlequins moments later for an 8-3 scoreline before the Varsity side added another penalty with the game ending 8-6.

Nakuru 8-19 Menengai Oilers

In the Nakuru derby Menengai Oilers had enough to outclass Nakuru RFC 19-8 to also maintain their good start to the season.

Nakuru scored first thanks to a drop goal by Phillip Okeyo, but could have conceded almost immediately after.

Oilers got a penalty on the Nakuru five, went for the try but were held back by resolute Nakuru defending.

However, incessant pressure would see the Oilers go ahead. Alvin Khavoli scored the game’s opening try, which was not converted to put them into the lead.

Beldad Ogeta then continued showing why he received praise from Shujaa head coach Kevin Wambua when he landed his seventh try of the season following a brilliant individual display, which was well converted by Dennis Abukuse. Oilers scored another try to put them 19-3 to the good.

In the second half, a weaving run from the Oilers 22 yard box by Chrisant Ojwang saw him score a popular try for Nakuru, but it was not enough to make them catch up with Oilers who dispatched them 19-8 in the end.

Kenya Cup fixture of the day, Kisumu RFC narrowly edged Black Blad 17-15.
