Kenya Rugby Union advertises U-20 coach position leaving current coach Curtis Olago's future with Chipu in limbo.

The Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) has advertised for the position of head coach for the Kenya U-20 team, a role that has been held since February 2021 by Curtis Olago.

The decision was made public on Tuesday marking a significant turn for the Kenya rugby 15s U20 side popularly known as Chipu.

Olago, a prominent figure in Kenyan rugby, has been at the helm of the team since February 2021.

In 2023 under his guidance the team participated in the U20 Barthes Trophy, a crucial platform where Africa's best rugby junior teams vie for supremacy.

In addition, they competed in the World Rugby U20 Trophy. Despite these opportunities, success has been elusive for the squad particularly marked by their defeats to Zimbabwe in both competitions.

Before his coaching career, Olago was a celebrated center, playing for various clubs including Mean Machine, Kisumu, Impala, Nondescripts, and KCB.

His transition to coaching post-retirement saw him leading KCB to four league titles in 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2021.

However, the KRU's recent announcement did not clarify Olago's current contractual status, leaving open the question of whether he might reapply for his role.

The KRU's advertisement for the new coach outlines specific qualifications and responsibilities for potential candidates.

The national rugby governing body is seeking a Kenyan resident with at least four years of coaching experience at the club or school level, backed by a record of significant success.

A World Rugby Level 2 coaching certification in sevens or fifteens rugby will be a key advantage.

The new coach will have a wide array of responsibilities including overseeing the under-20 squad and managing a performance program to prepare players for international assignments as specified by the KRU.

The role demands coordination and supervision of training programs, aligning with the strategies and technical approaches set by the Head of the 15s Programme.

Season planning, regular reporting, and an emphasis on balancing team and administrative goals are also part of the job description.

Furthermore, the new head coach will be responsible for delivering the playing aims and objectives for the season. This involves planning, recording, delivering, and evaluating all training sessions and tournaments.

Collaboration with other national squad coaches, club coaches, and age-grade coaches to define long-term player development pathways is crucial.

The ideal candidate will also need to exhibit strong people management and leadership skills, maintaining good conduct.

Additionally, the ability to foster excellent stakeholder relations and workplace cooperation is essential, highlighting the importance of a holistic approach to coaching beyond the field.
