The assistant coach is optimistic KCB can still catch up with circuit leaders Kabras Sugar.

KCB RFC assistant coach Dennis Ironman Mwanja is optimistic his charges can still give Kabras Sugar a run for their money despite failing to win the Prinsloo Sevens held over the weekend.

After winning the opening Dala 7s leg held in Kisumu in July, they have fallen short at the semi-final stage in Mombasa and Nakuru, and have had to be content with a third-place spot.

The Bankers finished third in Prinsloo after a 22-12 win over defending champions Menengai Oilers in the third-place playoff match.

They suffered a humiliating 15-0 loss to Kabras Sugar in the semi-final, making it the second leg in a row that they had fallen at the penultimate hurdle after losing 17-12 against Menengai Oilers in the Driftwood Sevens leg in Mombasa.

Mwanja says KCB will keep “biting, scratching, and clawing” their way to win the remaining legs.

“We are always challenging. We bite, scratch, and claw our way into every win. We don’t lie down and play dead. Historically, we have always been giving a good account of ourselves,” Mwanja said.

“It is a marathon, we still have a couple more legs to go. Like last year, it was decided on the last day. We cannot write off a circuit that is still halfway.”

Mwanja however is far from pleased with the inconsistency his boys showed in Nakuru, “blowing hot and cold”.

“We have had different results. We blew hot and cold. We did not fire when we were expected to and hence we ended up being knocked out in the semis and having to play in the third-place playoff.

"But, we will pick up from there, go back to the drawing board and work on our mistakes."

KCB are second on 56 points, just seven behind circuit leaders Kabras Sugar. They still stand a chance of catching up with the Kakamega-based outfit to stand a chance of lifting their fourth overall title at the end of the series.
