The Chipu captain aims to make a big name for himself at the senior level as KCB gears up for the Kenya Cup season.

KCB RFC’s promising youngster Michael Wamalwa is a man on a mission to break all the records that come his way for the Bankers once the new Kenya Cup season commences next month.

The Chipu captain was in stellar form during their Floodlit semi-final against Menengai Oilers last Saturday, brushing them aside 41-22, with Wamalwa himself getting on the end of two tries to cap off a man-of-the-match display in front of an ecstatic crowd at the Impala Club grounds.

The 20-year-old signed from Catholic Monks in the off-season, and has already set the ground running at KCB this season.

As they prepare for the final against Nondies for the second year in a row, Wamalwa believes there is still room for improvement considering that he is just “at 55 percent” sharpness by his own estimation.

Gauging myself, maybe 55 percent so far. There are personal boxes and goals that I am ticking and they are coming up well,”  Wamalwa told Pulse Sports.

“We are still in the off season, but what we are focusing on is when the season starts.”

The KCB centre has an eye on eventually ousting Andrew Amonde’s record of winning nine Kenya Cup trophies for the Bankers, but he acknowledges that there are no shortcuts to achieving that goal.

“I want to win the Kenya Cup this season. I am guessing Andrew (Amonde) is the one with the most cups and I would like to beat his record one day.”

Working with some of the best players the country has has rubbed off well on him, admitting that the level of professionalism at KCB is on another level.

“KCB underpins professionalism. Everyone knows what he is supposed to do. You just do your job, put a shift in and my fellow players back me up, so you see that the morale and team spirit is high.

“Having the senior players encourage you and tell you that you can do it. It gives me alot of motivation. If you look, most of these players have played in the Kenya Cup week in week out. They have the experience of playing in the national teams, so they rub it on me.”

Wamalwa however insists that he has no pressure to perform in order to please his teammates, saying that he just focuses on playing his own game.

“There is no pressure. I am just playing my game as I know best.”

The national 15s side, Kenya Simbas are currently in Kakamega preparing for the Elgon and Victoria Cup assignments, and with coach Jerome Paarwater saying that the door is open for new players to stake their claim, Wamalwa will fancy his chances should he continue with his upward trajectory.

“It will be good to earn the call up to Simbas because it is a dream for every player to play for the national team.”
