Marvin Odongo as a rugby player, was cherished by many until a career-threatening facial injury in 2018 in the Gold Cup game against Kenya that forced him to step back from active rugby.

Now the head coach at Stanbic Black Pirates, where he played all his club rugby, Odongo has been closely working with Coach Robert ‘Bobby’ Musinguzi, the former director of rugby and coach who left his role to pursue work commitments in Seychelles.

As he is fondly called, ‘The Black Sheep’ paid tribute to Coach Bobby, adding that his departure is a massive loss to the club because of his immense contribution over the years.

“Coach Bobby is a very good man; I run out of superlatives to describe him because he is everything to us; he is the most successful coach at the club,” Odongo noted.

“Everyone at the club knows he is a father figure to many of us.”

However, Odongo states that he has learnt the patience virtue from Musinguzi and hopes to do his best to replicate Bobby’s success at the club going forward.

“I have learnt to be patient from him, which is the most important virtue, understanding that everyone is different.”

“People should expect exactly what Coach Bobby would want; I am going to be him (Bobby).”

Coach Bobby joined the Stanbic Black Pirates in 1999 as a player until 2006, when he quit and started a coaching role.

He coached the Sailors, Pirates’ reserve side but took charge of the senior team in 2015, leading them to the league, the sevens circuit and the Uganda Cup.

In 2022, he handed over the coaching reins to his first captain Marvin Odongo to become the Director of Rugby, a role he officially left on Saturday.
