Amonde has revealed why the current crop of Kenya 7s players will dominate at the Olympic games in Paris.
Kenya 7s legend Andrew Amonde has explained why he thinks the current crop of players will finally be the ones that will actually deliver a podium place finish at the upcoming Paris Olympic games.
Amonde, who is the current strength and conditioning coach, played for the side from 2007 up until deciding to hang up his boots at the end of the Tokyo Olympic games, which took place in 2021.
He captained the side at the tournament, and also led them out in 2016 in Rio. During his tenure as captain, he was also able to help them deliver their maiden series leg win, when they dominated in Singapore during the 2015/2016 HSBC World Sevens Campaign.

In the build up to the games, where Kenya are set to travel to Miramas, France to prepare for the tournament, Amonde revealed how different the players of today are from the players he used to lead out to matches.
“The game has changed. It has grown, it has become faster. The boys have grown faster and bigger and from what I see these boys doing, I think we stand a good chance of going out there and presenting ourselves very well,” Amonde said.
Although the team Amonde led included some genuine top quality players including Collins Injera, Humphrey Kayange, Biko Adema, Dennis Ombachi and Oscar Ayodi, the veteran belives that the advice and expertise he, alongside fellow members of the coaching staff,have passed on to the team have helped them do well at the tournament.

Kenya Sevens coach Kevin Wambua has retained the same squad that has recorded impressive performances during his tenure for the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympics.
Reflecting on his experiences, Amonde emphasized the importance of the Olympics to an athlete’s career.
“The Olympics is the epitome of all sports. Everyone looks at it as the top. If you are able to go out and achieve what you can, because that is what most of the athletes go out and measure their success on.”
Amonde is hopeful that the current team’s hunger and the lessons passed down from the previous generation will lead to a historic achievement.
“We were not able to win when we were playing, but you can see the hunger in the young guys. That means we are passing something to the younger generation, which would be a proud moment for us.”
With the team gearing up for their preparations in France, Amonde’s optimism and the current squad’s potential set the stage for a promising performance at the Paris Olympics.
