The talented Daystar Falcons player was named the SJAK sportsman of the month, which he rightly earned as a result of his heroics for Shujaa last month.

Shujaa Sevens sensation Patrick Odongo has admitted that it has not been easy establishing himself as a Kenya Sevens player after his heroics inspired the side to deliver Paris 2024 Olympic qualification back in September.

Odongo, who lost his mother just before the Africa Sevens tournament started, became the top try scorer, inspiring his teammates to deliver the title under the stewardship of new head coach Kevin Wambua.

The talented Daystar Falcons player was named as the Sports Journalists Association of Kenya (SJAK) sportsman of the month, which he rightly earned as a result of his heroics last month.

Speaking after receiving the award, Odongo admitted that the competition for places has been stiff, saying that his position is far from certain especially considering that he is coming back from injury and many are fighting to take his place.

“It has not been easy considering when you get in,” Odongo told KTN news. ”I am currently nursing an injury but I hope I will be fit by next week,” he added.

“I have reason to worry because there are other players who are better than I am. I have my teammates here who are good competitors and are as good as I am, if not better.”

Odongo says he never expected to become a national hero so quickly especially considering he rose to prominence playing for Daystar Falcons, a “small team” in his words compared to bigger and more established teams like KCB and Kabras Sugar.

“They play for big clubs while I play for a university side, Daystar. It is difficult to compete with them.”

Odongo is running out of superlatives about the management of the team, expressing confidence that the new direction will return Kenya to the World Sevens Series at the first time of asking.

“We have a big chance to get back there because the kind of training we are doing and the kind of management we have is top notch.

“I have never been under this kind of management. The coaches are always there pushing us and everything about the training and coaches gives us a good chance to get there.”

Shujaa will be taking part in invitational tournaments as they continue to prepare for the 2024 Olympics, and will be taking part in the annual Safari Sevens tournament set to take place this November.
